Five Tips to Throwing the Best Kids Halloween Party

If any holiday seems custom made for kids, it has to be Halloween. When else do you get to dress up in fun costumes, act crazy and load up on candy? To help children get the most out of this kid-friendly occasion, why not throw a kids Halloween party? It gives kids an opportunity to share Halloween with friends and family, and it gives parents some great memories to share with their children.

To make a kids Halloween party as fun and stress-free as possible, these five things can help adults plan for a special day of Halloween fun.

  1. Themes: Choosing a theme is the first step in planning a Halloween party, because it sets the stage for everything from decorations to food. Themes are also a great way to let kids add a personal touch to their event. Younger kids might prefer less frightening themes like cartoons or princesses, while older children might want a theme based on a popular movie or television show. Try to lean towards themes that have lots of costume options so that guests have an opportunity to be creative and unique with their disguises.
  2. Decorations: Once a theme is chosen, the decorations for a kids Halloween party should follow the colors, characters and style of that theme.  For spookier settings, choose dark colors for paper streamers, napkins and dining ware. If a party’s theme is based on a popular character or show, try to find balloons or favors that feature their image. Also, black lights, fog machines, fake spider webs and plastic spiders can turn any space into a Halloween scene. Just be creative and have fun.
  3. Crafts: Organizing craft projects for younger kids can be a fun way to keep them busy and entertained. Paint paper plates and decorate them with construction paper to make simple jack-o-lantern’s, turn paper bags into custom candy sacks or make ghosts out of white glue and craft supplies. Craft projects don’t have to be elaborate to be fun.
  4. Activities: It’s not realistic to invite people over and expect a party to start. Guests, especially kids, want something to do while they’re there. Simple relay games can be made with balls or oranges that have been decorated to look like pumpkins, toilet paper can make great “mummy” wrap races and “pin the nose on the pumpkin” is easily created with poster board, markers and construction paper.
  5. Food: Kids like to play with their food, so make Halloween snacks that are fun and engaging. Decorate cookies or carrot sticks to look like fingers, invite kids to scarf down spaghetti “brains” or add raisin “bugs” to punch for an extra dash of imagination.

A kids Halloween party boasts limitless opportunities for fun and creativity. By incorporating these few simple steps into your party planning, you’ll have a kids Halloween party that is full of activity and smiling guests.
